Summer movie schedule

June 5, 2014

UnknownApplause roars as a crowd—high on buttery popcorn fumes and enough sugar to get a giant radioactive lizard buzzed, if it was into that kind of thing—watch the last breaths of the giant Claymation monster bubble up from the depths of the ocean and the Japanese, who have been tormented the whole time, cry sad/happy tears of sadness/happiness. Ishirō Honda effectively displays the post-war nuclear fears that were held by most everyone in the most epic way possible: with a giant whale-gorilla who destroys cities. It’s a social melodrama. It’s a great popcorn action flick. It’s quite poorly acted. It’s Godzilla.

It’s finally summer.

And that means that the summer movie schedules are out. And for all you crazed film buffs or casual movie-goers, we’ve listed here all the best showings this summer, both paid and free.

The Charles Theater has kicked off its Summer Revival Series in the biggest way, but the range of movies offered by the 75 year-old theater spans a wide range, from Quentin Tarantino’s cheeky B-movie tribute Reservoir Dogs to Spike Lee’s poignant Do the Right Thing, and everything in between. The list this season is heavily laden with adventure, detectives, and heists and seems perfect for summer.

Just a note: definitely try to take advantage of one last showing of Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville, it’s on the schedule for only one showing because of technical difficulties from the spring showing. Trust us, it’s worth it.
