Matmos turn “I Want Candy” into a song for Edward Snowden
Matmos covers Bow Wow Wow
Yes, you read that right. Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt of Matmos took the Bo-Diddley-Beat-jacking song about summer fun by Bow Wow Wow and reworked the lyrics into an homage to the famed NSA leaker Edward Snowden, who, as of this writing, is reportedly taking his asylum plea to hunky Russian leader Vladimir Putin. So instead of “He’s got everything that I desire/Sets the summer sun on fire/I want candy/ I want candy” you get “He’s got the meta-data they desire/ Sets the NSA on fire/ I want Snowden/ I want Snowden,” and what have you.
With Horse Lords members Owen Gardner and Sam Haberman providing guitar and drums, this is a pretty straightforward and, we might add, pretty hilarious reinterpretation — at least until the four tack on a spacey instrumental at the end, which is not necessarily faithful to the original but is still great.
As Daniel explains to the A.V. Club interviewer, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, the song is topical and manages to appeal to the band’s “liberal base.” More importantly, Daniel thinks Snowden is hot, and not in the rise-in-notoriety sense. In the final seconds of the video, the interviewer asks Daniel for clarification: “But you still want to have sex with Edward Snowden, just to be clear.” Without even thinking about it, he responds, “Absolutely.”
