The Strange, Post-“I’m the Ish” Career of DJ Class
Since “I’m the Ish,” DJ Class’ career has been all over the place, but that’s oddly appropriate given the wonky music climate right now. We’re all still waiting for his Alameda and Cold Spring Universal Republic major label debut–and it’s safe to assume we’re never gonna see it–but meanwhile, Class has cleverly bounced between courting the mainstream and remaining doggedly, awesomely committed to making angry club music.
Tracks like “I Don’t Give a Fuck,” a brilliant DJ edit of ODB’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” and the recent “Bitch Ass Niggarrrr” aren’t going to grab anybody but club heads, but Class knows that. At the same time, there’s the “I’m the Ish” follow-up “Dance Like a Freak” and his excellent remix of Usher’s “OMG,” as well as work with Pitbull (“Juice Box”) and Clinton Sparks (“Favorite DJ”). Oh yeah, the less the said about last year’s Blue Lava, the better. He’s also a morning DJ at Power 98.3 in Phoenix–as in, Arizona.
Which brings us to “Arizona Girl.” Produced by Class, featuring raps from Class’ fellow 98.3 DJ JX3 and Class himself, and released under the name Stackz, it’s a grab for a pop-rap hit with some added regionality thrown in there (“I got a bad chick from Arizona”). It probably isn’t going to make its way outside of Phoenix, but it is another example of Class’ strange, savvy post-“I’m the Ish” career.
