Zachi Café appears closed

March 31, 2010

It has come to our attention that Zachi Café, the Mediterranean cafe and gourmet market at the corner of Howard and Read Streets, has closed its doors after just more than a year. According to the staff of the Beatnik Barber Shop next door, Zachi closed sometime last week without announcing its departure to any of the neighbors. While the web site is still up and running, the phone lines ring without answer. Records of a half-hearted social media campaign can be found online. The Zachi Twitter contains no updates on the situation—in fact, it hasn’t been updated since Dec. 19, 2009. Zachi’s Facebook page is similarly derelict, with only two fans, compared to City Cafe, which is going strong at 1,113 fans and updates its wall several times a day. We have been unable to get in touch with owner Hoda Kader, the hard working woman who toiled behind the counter and in the kitchen churning out Zachi’s dynamic fare. If anyone knows whether Zachi or some derivation thereof will be back, give word below.
