Old Bay Beer is Coming!

April 4, 2014

Screen shot 2014-04-04 at 11.52.45 AMThis summer, Frederick brewery Flying Dog and Old Bay will introduce Dead Rise Summer Ale, “a Belgian Pale Ale brewed with Old Bay.”

The 5.6 ABV brew will be available on draft and in six packs from Memorial Day through Labor Day all over the mid-Atlantic region. Flying Dog says proceeds from sales will benefit True Blue, an organization dedicated to helping build the Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab population.

In connection with Dead Rise (which is named after boats built specifically to navigate the Bay), Flying Dog and Old Bay will release a cookbook that “combines Old Bay, beer, and Maryland seafood,” with recipes from Bryan Voltaggio (Frederick’s Volt), Mike Isabella (D.C.’s Grafiatto), Spike Gjerde (Woodberry Kitchen), and many others.

Please stop shoehorning Old Bay and Berger cookies into every conceivable food/beverage. Sure, you get free publicity and transplants/tourists will woof it down in droves but…well, I guess there is no downside. Carry on.

The Berger beer was a very average stout IMO. I think this one has the potential to be a very unique brew.
