Local Chef Competes on Next Top Chef

Baltimore’s Timothy Dean, the 39-year-old chef at Prime Steakhouse in Fells Point, is one of cheftestants on the forthcoming seventh season of Bravo‘s reality hit, Top Chef, which pits 17 chefs against each other in a series of culinary challenges. Sure it’s a silly title to win, but it comes with a prize of $125,000 and some serious name-recognition (hello Voltaggio Brothers).

If Dean proves the victor, the money couldn’t come at a better time. His company, T.D. Bistro, Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection May 14, according to court records. This isn’t the first time Dean has had money woes—his restaurants TD Lounge and Timothy Dean Bistro have also fallen by the wayside.

According to Dean, Prime will not be affected by the bankruptcy filing because it’s owned by a different corporation, Prime Baltimore, Inc., where he’s a consulting chef. He even plans on opening another restaurant, Prime Steakhouse by Timothy Dean, in Washington this summer. But state records revealed that Prime Baltimore is currently in forfeiture with the state of Maryland for bouncing its incorporation check.

The show was filmed in Dean’s hometown of Washington, D.C., and premieres June 16 at 9 p.m.
