Celebrate Liberté! Egalité! Fraternité! with Champagne! Chocolat! Gougéres!

July 13, 2013

france-flagWhen the French peasants, workers and revolutionaries stormed the Bastille in 1789 shouting Liberté! Egalité! Fraternité! it’s unlikely that any in the mob realized that their cries would morph over the next couple of centuries to become champagne toasts for well-heeled francophiles on Bastille Day, which comes tomorrow, Sunday, July 14.

This year, the Roland Park restaurant Petit Louis Bistro will again celebrate the French Revolution with a menu of French food and wine, with red berets and mustaches for all. $50, $29 for kids. Un peu more egalitarian perhaps is the Hampden fete down the street. Susanna Sigler, owner of Ma Petite Shoe and its soeur Choux, will be blasting the Marseillaise, tipping the bubbly and handing out chocolat and gougères (12-5 p.m.). This one is free. Both celebrations on Sunday.
