Emmy award-winning, Oscar-nominated documentarian Ken Burns was in Baltimore Dec. 8, at the B&O Railroad Museum. He’s been in town often this year, he says, giving speeches, doing promo appearances, visiting The Sun. This time it was to win yet another award: the 2009 Patriotism Award bestowed by the American Flag Foundation. The foundation, whose job it is “to encourage patriotism . . . through education and outreach focused on the flag” —pause, if you will, and let that last part sink in—has in the past given this honor to the likes of Willard Scott, Brooks Robinson, the Hon. William Donald Schaefer, as well as a handful of high-ranking military men that few civilians are likely to have heard of. Before Burns accepted his award, he took a few moments to talk to City Paper (see video, below). Known by some jealous filmmakers as “he who sucks all the fun(ding) out of the room,” Burns comes across as highly likeable. No doubt he often has to in his line of grant- and sponsor-dependent work. But apparently someone forgot to tell Burns’ sponsors—Bank of America being the newest and highest profile—that the economy is in the toilet, because he’s presently juggling [...]

It was a bright, warm Friday afternoon in early May when a bleached-blond Matthew Modine was sighted in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton in Georgetown. “I took the train with him and he had a seersucker suit on,” Bradley Cooper leans over and whispers. He’s sitting, much more casually attired in a white jersey tee and chambray flat front trousers, in the hotel’s small but tall round conference room–it used to be a grain silo–and messing around with City Paper‘s cell-phone-sized Flip video camcorder. Besides doing press interviews for his upcoming movie The Hangover, Cooper is in Washington for the White House Press Dinner–and maybe that’s why Modine is here, too. “He looks like a character out of some sort of Tuck Everlasting or something–you know that book?” He rubs his eyes–it’s late in the afternoon. “I don’t know where to put this,” he says about the Flip. “It’d be great to get a wide shot.” Actors are always aware of the camera and Cooper never forgets it’s there even though he seems like just a normal guy. Read more in Always the Groomsman . . .Supporting player Bradley Cooper finally gets a comedy lead in The Hangover [youtube_embed]
