Normal’s Books and Records Celebrates 21 Years With Sale, Music

June 15, 2011
By

Normal’s Books and Records, Charles Village/Waverly’s essential subcultural secondhand retail outlet, turned 21 years old June 1, and it’s marking the occasion with a weekend-long sale on all used merchandise and a special birthday concert. Everything used (books, vinyl, CDs, what have you) is 30 percent off Friday, June 17, through Sunday, June 19, and on Saturday at 2 p.m., the store hosts a bill of musical performers including local pedal-steel sorceress Susan Alcorn, experimental-music mahout John Berndt, the bands Sweatpants and Sea Couch, and probably more, plus promises of “snacks and beverages.” It’s hard to imagine Baltimore’s cultural life without Normal’s and its various offshoots (the Shattered Wig Press and Wig Night, the Red Room, etc.), and our lives and our shelves would certainly be barer without it, so this is something worth celebrating beyond the bargains and the sounds. See you there.
