Poe Boys

February 4, 2013

With the Super Bowl championship in hand Baltimore’s Ravens–the only Pro Football team named for a poem–can expect lots of solicitations.

It is in that dark spirit that author-house buff A.N. Devers takes to Slate  to lament the fate of the Raven’s namesake’s creator’s house, lately relegated to becoming an adjunct of the B&O Railroad Museum. (pdf of report available here)

The consultant’s plan, you may (or may not) recall, was unveiled last October, the day before the public comment deadline.

Says Devers:

While this plan unfurls, in the shadow of the Ravens’ corporate- and taxpayer-funded M&T Bank Stadium, it’s impossible not to ask what role the football team ought to play in stewarding Edgar Allan Poe’s Baltimore legacy. They are making millions on the City of Baltimore’s literary heritage, filling their coffers with money made with the help of Edgar Allan Poe, his house and his gravesite.
