Zion Church’s Christkindlmarkt

November 22, 2011
By

Some folks usher in Christmas with Black Friday shopping, but on the weekend after Thanksgiving, Zion Church opts for something even more traditional: its annual Christkindlmarkt. A re-creation of the Christmas markets that take place all over Germany leading up to the holidays, Zion’s Christkindlmarkt offers the chance to purchase traditional German Christmas candle pyramids, ornaments, and crafts, and as much lebkuchen, pfeffernusse, and stollen as your pocketbook allows. If stocking up on sweets isn’t your thing, make a beeline instead for the outdoor courtyard and treat yourself to a brat and a cup of spicy glühwein.  Locally made baked goods and Binkert’s sausages will also be for sale. The Christkindlmarkt takes place at Zion (City Hall Plaza, 400 E. Lexington St.) Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
