MICA Officially Buys Globe Poster

March 11, 2011
By

The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) will officially announce on Tuesday, March 22, that it indeed plans to buy approximately 75 percent of the remaining assets of Baltimore’s Globe Poster. Early word of a prospective deal between the art school and the shuttered letterpress had leaked a few weeks ago, but a press release issued by MICA today confirms an agreement has been reached between MICA and the Cicero Family, which has owned and operated Globe for nearly 40 years. MICA will acquire the majority of Globe’s unrivaled and historic collection of wood type, wooden and metal letterpress “cuts,” and original letterpress posters to be used in undergraduate and graduate classes in graphic design and illustration as well as printmaking. The release also includes the touching news that Bob Cicero will teach a class at MICA in the fall using the same materials he worked with daily for decades.
