Big Boyz, King of Pens

May 19, 2010
By Andrea Appleton

Big Boyz Bail Bonds pens have become an inescapable fact of life in Baltimore. The company reportedly has several employees who do nothing but deliver them. The pens have inspired some truly ridiculous Halloween costumes, and giant, inflatable versions are even available for those who desire them. Now the marketing genius behind the ubiquitous pink and yellow icons has finally been recognized … or at least someone has.

Baltimore SmartCEO magazine–“a regional ‘growing company’ publication”–recently awarded Big Boyz CEO Ross Nochumowitz the 2010 Circle of Excellence Award in the field of marketing. An article that accompanies the award says the pens were born in 2002, and Nochumowitz told a City Paper reporter that they were the brainchild of his mother, Amie Sue Nuchomowitz. But Vincent Magliano, who owned Big Boyz before the Nuchomowitz family took over in 2000, says the pens were his idea.

In a recent phone call, Magliano added, however, that he didn’t want to be a “jerk” about the award. “I’m the king of marketing,” he said. “If they want to take the crown for the pens, that’s fine. They can be king of the pens.” Magliano, now co-owner of Got Bail? Bail Bond, LLC, has recently begun a massive marketing campaign of his own. Got Bail? is giving away glasses, keychains, pens, and lanyards, Magliano says, and at least 50,000 t-shirts this summer. “If you want to do a story about promotion, give me a call,” he said.

Magliano is a convicted cocaine dealer, but he does not appear to be the only one with a questionable past. In 2006, the Baltimore Sun did an investigative series about the Nochumowitz family–including, in large part, Amie Sue Nuchomowitz–and their earnings from ground rent. According to the series, the family’s companies often sued to take houses from homeowners who were behind in their rent payments.

How about a bigger story on how the city takes homes for unpaid water bills. Now thats something to talk about.

Not sure why the last paragragh was added to a story about promotion but I see those pens everywhere. I never heard of the Got bail? company but I see those pink and yellow pens everywhere. Thats the only Bail Bonds company I know and knock on wood hope I never have to use.

i agree with ellie — not sure what the last part has to do with the pens. the first part of the story was pretty neat — no one bothers to market in Baltimore at all, that is, except for BBBB! it’s ridiculous, and frankly it makes B’more look like shit.

You are funny! You can’t wait to see this on headlines? LOL

That is funny. Vincent says that if you want to do a promotion to give him a call. He does not say that he had testified against alot of his friends as well as his friend Scott Fullwood , his best man at Vincents wedding. He was and still is someone that can never be trusted . What most people do not know is that Vincent gets alot of personal information from the people that he bails out and uses all that information to work with the Government . He is an INFORMANT and it seems that VINCENT will always be an INFORMANT . You do not have to believe anything I write on here but you can read it for yourself at the FEDERAL COURTHOUSE 101 East Lombard Street .

Nice! It shows that the simpliest things can sometimes be a great inspiration. I really love what you’ve done with it!
