Heart’s Place Shelter Staves Off Closure
After City Paper ran an article last month describing the financial plight of Heart’s Place, a small homeless shelter in Charles Village, things started looking up, according to shelter director Carol Berman. At the time of the article, it appeared that the emergency winter shelter would have to close at least a month early this year due to budget problems. But then donations started coming in. One benevolent reader, she says, sent in a $5,000 donation, and several thousand dollars were raised last weekend at an annual benefit dance called the Open Hearts Ball. The shelter now has funds to remain open the rest of the season, through mid-April.
In an e-mail to City Paper this week, Berman wrote: “Even in this economy, people have really opened their hearts to Heart’s Place Shelter.”
