GET REALISM Baltimore’s Schuler School of Fine Arts celebrates the 50th anniversary of its founding this week. Hans and Ann Schuler started their classical, traditional realist art school in 1959 as a response to the 1950s explosion of abstract expressionism and other emerging forms, and since three generations of the Schuler family have run the school, where 91-year old Ann still teaches. OPENINGS AND RECEPTIONS The Parkside Fine Food and Spirits‘ featured artist for June is Eli Halpin, with a reception at 6 p.m. June 11. Napoleart-featuring mixed-media work by Rick Santiago and Bonnie Cunningham with installations by Russell Kilbaugh-opens June 13 at Art Under Ground Studio. Rachel E. Hummel’s photography show Rach Against the Machine opens June 10 in the Holley Gallery of the Annapolis’ MFA Circle Gallery, Maryland Federation of Art with a reception from 3-5 p.m. June 14. A reception for Hoffberger Female Painters 2009, which features 11 emerging female artists, starts at 2:30 p.m. June 14 at the Sub-basement Artist Studios.
CLOSING The Morgan State University Students Exhibit Thesis Projects closes its run at AIA Baltimore Bookstore and Gallery June 10. Matt Muirhead’s E(n)tymology ends June 12 at Antreasian Gallery. The Youth Art Show, which showcases self-portraits from first through fifth grade Patterson Park Public Charter School students, ends June 15 at Salt.
